Perry come staggering out a minute later. He appeared drunk, his face colorless in the night lights. No, not drunk. More like he was dazed. Like he'd seen something unspeakable.

Jack Perry was still trembling as he made his way back to the gallery.
The kid had gotten a bat and moved on deck. The bill of his hat stuck out from his helmet, pulled so low his eyes were lost. But Jack thought he could feel them fingering his mind.
As he moved back to the fence, he glanced at the kid's parents in the grandstand, thinking that they had no idea what lay ahead of them.
